Apartment Gardening Tips & Tricks
While we are not QUITE in garden season yet, I thought I’d give you a few tips and tricks I’ve picked up along the way for keeping indoor gardening and apartment gardening in particular, when you don’t have a hose, or an outdoor space to clean things up a bit easier.
First off - please head over to the YouTube channel and subscribe and like! We hope to grow this over the next year and your support would mean allowing us to really dig into this world! (of course that pun was intended!)
More about each of these in the video, however, here’s some details on our favorite indoor gardening suggestions.
Keep your Grow Lights Pretty
Yes, a system like the bamboo lights from Gardener’s Supply are expensive, but worth it! These lights make you want to fill them up with all your lovely plant babies, and not feel like you have an eyesore of a metal shelf in your living room. We have two small systems, plus the tray and casters and it has served me so well over the past three growing seasons that we have used them. One of the benefits are the super strong LED lights, that are not hot to the touch, and don’t require lowering to the plant height. For small space this is SO KEY.
Keep it Contained
Use large storage bins as your potting shelf/area. Then pack up your supplies right in that bin. Keeps the mess contained to one spot.
Let it Dry
If it does get messy — let the soil dry, it’s much easier to vacuum or clean if the soil isn’t wet.
Don’t Buy Too Big
I am personally enjoying these pretty small containers for seedlings, it allows me to keep count of my seedlings in smaller amounts than the usual 24 plug trays, so that I can keep the humidity dome on for that one variety easily, as well as transport them in and out to the balcony with ease. They also fit PERFECTLY on those shelves - I can fit 15 exactly.
Know Your Quantities
Use Jiffy recharge seed starters. These guys aren’t the best, but honestly you can’t find a better solution when you don’t have the space to make a mess or store extra seed starter. I know I need 12 disks, and then I hydrate exactly 12 disks. I squeeze them into those trays. One thing to note, I have never found the casing on them very good once you plant them out so remove when planting out in the garden or up to a bigger size pot as they grow on.
